Start with consistent measurements

Measure in feet and use the same unit throughout the calculation. For pools with a shallow and deep end, estimate average depth by adding the shallow depth and deep depth, then dividing by two. That shortcut works best when the floor changes gradually. A pool with large shelves, steep transitions, or multiple depth zones may need separate sections.

Rectangular pool

Length × width × average depth × 7.5

Round pool

Diameter × diameter × average depth × 5.9

Oval pool

Length × width × average depth × 5.9

Irregular pools

Divide the pool into simpler rectangles, circles, or ovals. Estimate each section separately, then add the results. Subtracting steps and benches is rarely exact, but considering large shallow areas can improve the estimate.

Important: these formulas produce estimates. Builder plans, equipment records, fill-meter readings, or professional measurements may provide a better number.

Check whether the estimate makes sense

Compare the result with the pool’s dimensions, equipment documentation, previous service records, and how the water responds to carefully measured adjustments. If normal additions consistently move readings much more or less than expected, verify the volume and test method before changing the estimate.
