Start with your pool—not a universal number
Appropriate targets depend on the sanitizer system, pool surface, equipment, climate, and product instructions. Use guidance from your test-kit, sanitizer, equipment, and surface manufacturers. Local pool conditions also matter.
The readings most owners track
Free chlorine
Free chlorine represents sanitizer available to help control contaminants. Its appropriate level is connected to stabilizer level and the sanitation method being used.
pH
pH affects swimmer comfort, equipment, surfaces, and how effectively the water-care system works. Avoid large, rushed corrections.
Total alkalinity
Total alkalinity helps buffer pH movement. It should be considered alongside pH rather than corrected mechanically without watching the overall trend.
Cyanuric acid or stabilizer
Stabilizer protects chlorine from sunlight, but excessive levels can make water management more difficult. Because it does not disappear quickly, a high reading deserves confirmation before taking major action.
Calcium hardness
Calcium matters for both surfaces and scale risk. The right range depends heavily on pool surface and overall water balance.
A safer adjustment order
- Confirm the test result when it is surprising.
- Review the product label and calculate using the actual pool volume.
- Add one chemical at a time—never mix pool chemicals.
- Circulate as directed by the label.
- Retest before making another major correction.
