Clean or service the filter only according to its manufacturer’s instructions; cleaning too often can be as unhelpful as waiting too long.

Review the rest of the water balance

pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, stabilizer, temperature, and sanitizer method all affect how the water behaves. High pH can reduce chlorine effectiveness, while excess calcium or a rapid chemical change can contribute to visible haze. Confirm surprising readings before making a major adjustment.

Do not add several products at once. Follow each product label, keep chemicals separate, circulate as directed, and retest before the next correction.

Think about what changed recently

Heavy swimming, dust, wind, rain, landscaping debris, sunscreen, an algae treatment, or a recent chemical addition can all create temporary cloudiness. Record what happened, when the cloudiness began, and whether it is improving after filtration. That timeline often points to the most likely cause.

Do not swim when you cannot clearly see the pool bottom or drain. Ask a qualified pool professional for help when cloudiness persists, testing gives conflicting results, equipment is leaking or losing flow, algae keeps returning, or you are unsure how products may interact.

  1. Confirm the chlorine test and check the other key readings.
  2. Inspect circulation, baskets, return flow, and filter pressure.
  3. Brush and remove debris so the filter can capture it.
  4. Review recent weather, swimmer load, and chemical additions.
